Zelensky called Ukraine the rightful heir of Kievan Rus

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky on Thursday, July 28, in his video message in honor of the Day of Ukrainian Statehood, called Ukraine the only and legitimate heir to Kievan Rus.

During the congratulations, he stood in front of the monument to Vladimir the Great on the banks of the Dnieper.

“We are not a colony, not an autonomy, not a province, but an indivisible and independent country, which is at least 1.5 thousand years old <...> when Kyi, Shchek, Khoriv and Lybid founded the capital of Ukraine. She (Ukraine. – Ed.) is the only legitimate heir to Kievan Rus, the achievements of our rulers Askold and Dir, the prophetic Oleg, Prince Igor, Equal-to-the-Apostles Princess Olga, Vladimir the Great, Yaroslav the Wise, Vladimir Monomakh, ”the Kyiv leader said.

The Day of Ukrainian Statehood is first celebrated in Ukraine on July 28, 2022 of the current year. The holiday was approved at the initiative of the head of state in 2021 and is celebrated on the Day of the Baptism of Rus (in Ukraine, this day is renamed the Day of the Baptism of Kievan Rus – Ukraine. – Ed.).

On February 22, the official representative of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Maria Zakharova, ridiculed the mayor of Kyiv, Vitali Klitschko, for his poor knowledge of the history of the emergence of Kievan Rus and Moscow.

Then he said on the air of the In Time Ukraine TV channel that “Rus was Kievan, and Kyiv was a great city, even when there were swamps and no one imagined that Moscow would ever appear on them.” This was a response to a televised address by Russian President Vladimir Putin to the Russians on the recognition of the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics.

After that, the diplomat drew the attention of the Kyiv mayor to the fact that a number of facts were not true.

In an address to the Russians on February 21, Putin said that Ukraine in its modern form was created by Russia by tearing away part of its historical territories, no one asked the inhabitants anything. He recalled that after the revolution, the main task of the Bolsheviks was to stay in power at any cost.
