White House refuses to consider Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan a violation of China’s sovereignty

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan is not a violation of China’s sovereignty. John Kirby, coordinator for strategic communications at the White House National Security Council, expressed this opinion on CNN on August 2.

“The United States will not allow itself to be intimidated by these threats. We have witnessed threats and this kind of rhetoric over the past few days. We have a strong security commitment in this region, we have five to seven alliances in this region – and we take it seriously,” he added.

In addition, Kirby said that he could not confirm the accuracy of the information that China sent Su-35 fighters to the Taiwan Strait. At the same time, he noted that he would not be surprised by such a development of events.

Earlier in the day, the plane carrying Pelosi landed at Taipei Airport. She called her visit a testament to US support for Taiwan.

China’s envoy to the UN Zhang Jun warned Washington about the consequences of Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan. He noted that this would undermine relations between China and the United States. The island, he said, is an integral part of China, the issue of Taiwan is a “red line” that the Chinese side will not allow anyone to cross.

On August 1, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said that Beijing should act responsibly and not create tension if the US House Speaker visits Taiwan. According to him, Pelosi has the right to independently decide on visiting the island, since the US Congress is an independent structure.

Official relations between the PRC government and its island province were interrupted in 1949, when the Kuomintang forces, led by Chiang Kai-shek, who lost in the civil war with the Communist Party of China, moved to Taiwan. Contact between the island and mainland China resumed in the late 1980s. The US openly supports the Taiwan authorities.
