Verification by banks of e-mail and phone numbers of customers has become mandatory

Since October 1, the Central Bank has obliged Russian credit organizations to identify all devices from which citizens make online transactions, the press service of the financial regulator reports.

Specialists of the Bank of Russia indicated that such actions are necessary for additional protection of clients from cyber fraudsters. Now credit organizations must check the client’s email address and phone number to send notifications.

According to the regulator, the attackers stole 6.1 billion rubles from the Russians over the six months of this year. Last year, bank customers lost 13.6 billion rubles due to such actions. This is 33.8% more than in 2020.

The Central Bank is also involved in the preparation of a number of initiatives to combat fraud. These include a draft law on information exchange with the Ministry of Internal Affairs. The latter is already under consideration in the State Duma of the Russian Federation.
