Two centuries on guard of health: Filatov Children’s Hospital celebrates its 180th anniversary

The head physician of the clinic, Antonina Chubarova, said: “The Filatov Children’s Hospital is one of the most famous specialized medical institutions not only in Moscow, but also in Russia. Every year, thousands of small patients from all over the country save the lives of children. The Children’s Clinical Hospital named after N.F. Filatov is one of the best children’s hospitals of the capital. To be among the first, of course, is a great honor, but at the same time it is also a great responsibility. The hospital coped with its mission with dignity. With her direct participation, the formation of domestic pediatrics, pediatric surgery took place, and the doctors of the institution contributed and continue to make a huge contribution to improving the quality and accessibility of medical care for children.”

The name of the hospital has changed several times. Initially, it was “Bronnaya” – by the name of Malaya Bronnaya Street, where it was located. But later, the princes Shcherbatovs gave the city and children their inheritance, and in 1882 the clinic moved to the estate on Sadovaya-Kudrinskaya Street, the hospital became known as Sofiyskaya in honor of Princess Sofia Shcherbatova. In 1922, the medical institution was named after Nil Fedorovich Filatov, an outstanding pediatrician consulted at the hospital on Bronnaya for more than 16 years. He devoted a lot of time to the study of childhood diseases, became one of the first domestic pediatricians whose scientific work is mentioned in the history of foreign medicine.

In the 20th century, the hospital was repeatedly turned into a military hospital. The wounded were accommodated here both during the revolution of 1905 and during the Great Patriotic War. The hospital repeatedly came under shelling, but doctors continued to provide medical care to children and conduct elective surgeries.

In Filatovskaya, for the first time in the country, they began to perform endoscopic operations for children. Today, about 40% of all surgical interventions are performed using minimally invasive techniques and endoscopy. In the Children’s Clinical Hospital named after N.F. Filatov, the country’s first department of pathology of newborns and premature infants, and the first neonatal intensive care unit in a multidisciplinary children’s hospital appeared, which predetermined its leading place in the development of technologies for nursing premature babies with low (less than 1.5 kg) and extremely low (less than 1 kg) ) body weight.

The pediatric service of the hospital has the greatest experience in Russia in nursing severe children with “short bowel” syndrome.

“We do unique things every day,” the head of the pediatric thoracic surgery department of the Children’s Clinical Hospital named after V.I. N.F. Filatov and the chief pediatric surgeon of Moscow Alexander Razumovsky. Indeed, many types of operations in the field of thoracic surgery and neonatal surgery are carried out only in the Filatov hospital.

To date, the Filatov Hospital has 30 medical and diagnostic departments, the most modern equipment and advanced diagnostic and treatment methods. But, of course, the main value of a medical institution is highly qualified specialists who save the lives of little patients every day.

“Careful people work in the Filatov hospital, for whom their profession is a matter of their whole life. Among our employees there are several medical dynasties, the same continuity exists in the families of our patients. Those children who were once saved by our specialists now trust the hospital with their health already their children and even grandchildren.I think the numerous testimonials of grateful patients are the main indicator that we are moving in the right direction. Each patient is special for us, each situation is unique.Largely due to such a reverent attitude of specialists to children and to their work the hospital was able to achieve high results,” said Antonina Chubarova.
