On September 6, Director for Eastern Europe Gleb Kostarev and Director for the CIS Vladimir Smerkis announced their departure from the Binance cryptocurrency exchange. Both were also responsible for the company’s business in the Russian Federation.
Kostarev worked at Binance for five years. In his post, he thanked the CEO of the exchange, Changpeng Zhao, and co-founder Yi He, for their trust and opportunity.
Smerkis, who has been in office for two years, promised to share the reasons behind the decision later.
Binance itself did not officially comment on the situation.
Recall that at the end of August, Binance removed Sberbank, Tinkoff and Alfa banks under US sanctions from its P2P platforms.
The exchange also prohibited Russians from exchanging transactions with any fiat currencies, with the exception of the ruble.
One of the experts interviewed by ForkLog suggested considering the possibility of blocking restrictive exchanges in the Russian Federation.
Against this background, representatives of Binance said that they are studying, among other things, the possibility of completely leaving the jurisdiction. However, experts called such a scenario “unlikely.”
Later, the support of the exchange noted that Russian users will be able to withdraw funds if the company leaves the country.
