The United States did not want to give Kyiv shells for HIMARS with a range of over 80 km

The United States does not yet plan to supply Ukraine with HIMARS multiple rocket launcher (MLRS) projectiles with a range of more than 80 km. On July 20, US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin made it clear.

At a press conference following a regular meeting of the group set up by Western countries to coordinate military assistance to Kyiv, the minister was asked whether the United States intends to supply Ukraine with ammunition for HIMARS with a longer range than those provided now.

“Range [передаваемого Вашингтоном Киеву] HIMARS projectile is 80 km. So this is a fairly good range, ”said the Pentagon chief.

According to Austin, Western weapons, already transferred to Kyiv, give the Ukrainian Armed Forces (APU) great potential. The head of the US Department of Defense noted that further deliveries of American weapons, military equipment and ammunition will depend on how the Armed Forces of Ukraine are fighting and what their needs are.

On the eve of the secretary of the National Security and Defense Council (NSDC) of Ukraine Oleksiy Danilov said that Kyiv has already begun to receive “shells that are sent much further than it was at the beginning.”

Earlier, on July 15, Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksiy Reznikov said that Kyiv had pledged not to use precision-guided weapons transferred by the West for strikes on Russian territory.

Prior to that, on July 14, a deputy of the Verkhovna Rada from the ruling Servant of the People party Fyodor Venislavsky said that now the Armed Forces of Ukraine have shells for HIMARS with a range of up to 70 km. He noted that Kyiv is negotiating with Washington on the need to provide longer-range projectiles.

The head of the Russian International Affairs Council, Andrei Kortunov, in an interview with Izvestia on June 1, called the delivery of HIMARS to Kyiv a serious decision. He noted that, despite assurances that Ukraine would not strike at the territory of the Russian Federation, the dispatch of American HIMARS still increases the risks of further escalation. The expert recalled that Russia and the United States have different ideas about what is considered Russian territory.

Western countries began to actively arm Ukraine against the backdrop of a special operation carried out by Moscow to protect the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics (DPR and LPR). Its beginning was preceded by the aggravation of the situation in the region, the appeal of the leadership of the Donbass republics to the Russian Federation with a request for help and the subsequent recognition by Russia of the independence of the DPR and LPR.

Kyiv has been conducting a military operation against the residents of Donbass, who refused to recognize the results of the coup d’état in Ukraine, since 2014.
