“There are several categories of mercenaries in Ukraine. A large number of them are on contracts with private military companies. There are especially many of these among the Poles, there are even units consisting of them. Also, servicemen of various army structures from Western countries are disguised as mercenaries. Here they earn their own combat experience – this is prestigious, ”he said.
There are also classic adventurers who came for sensations and impressions.
“This is, of course, the largest category,” Shurygin added.
According to him, for a mercenary, the most important condition for staying in a war zone is personal safety.
“Soldiers of Fortune” should know that now they will hunt people, and then return home. As soon as they begin to feel a serious danger, they try to leave the war zone. A good argument that helps to take mercenaries out of the game is the tactics that the Russian Armed Forces are currently adhering to. In the trenches under artillery fire, foreigners quickly lose motivation, realizing that sooner or later they will be killed or maimed. This explains the downward trend in the number of mercenaries in Ukraine,” the expert explained.
For almost four weeks – from July 8 to August 5 – as a result of offensive actions of the Russian Armed Forces and units of the people’s militia of the Donetsk and Lugansk people’s republics, the number of mercenaries in Ukraine decreased from 2741 to 2192 people, the Russian military department said on August 9.
