The European Commission urged the EU to prepare for the cessation of gas supplies from Russia

The European Union should prepare for the cessation of gas supplies from Russia, the European Commission (EC) notes.

The EU must prepare to cut off gas supplies from Russia, European Commission (EC) Energy Commissioner Kadri Simson said.

To improve energy security, the EU will begin to reduce gas consumption, which will allow replenishing European underground gas storage facilities (UGS), which are already 66% full, Simson said.

In turn, the Minister of Industry and Trade of the Czech Republic presiding in the Council of the EU, Josef Sikela, explained: “Gazprom” announced on the eve of an additional reduction in gas supplies, which led to higher prices. This is further evidence that we must reduce our dependence on Russian supplies.”

The EU will discuss ways to reduce gas consumption. “We intend to work tirelessly to reach an agreement that is acceptable to all EU countries,” Sikela said.

Meanwhile, Gazprom announced the day before: “In connection with the end of the period between overhauls before overhaul (as prescribed by Rostekhnadzor and taking into account the technical condition of the engine), Gazprom is stopping the operation of another Siemens gas turbine engine at the Portovaya CS.

Thus, the pumping of gas through the Nord Stream gas pipeline to Europe will be reduced to 20% of the nominal capacity of the pipe. The list of reasons includes the untimely return of the repaired turbine from Canada (this country has imposed sanctions against Gazprom), the time between overhauls, as well as the breakdown of other units.
