The European Commission denied the statements of the Russian Federation about the impossibility of transferring the gas turbine due to sanctions

The European Commission says Western sanctions against Moscow are not an obstacle to the transfer of a Siemens gas turbine from Germany to Russia.

This was reported by Ukrinform with reference to “Radio Liberty“.

Russian state-owned energy giant Gazprom has cut gas supplies via the Nord Stream 1 gas pipeline to Germany to one-fifth of capacity since July 27, saying the move was necessary as it did not receive the turbine after it was sent for maintenance .

Gazprom said the sanctions made it impossible to supply a Siemens turbine to the Portovaya gas pipeline compressor station.Nord Stream-1“.

But both Germany and the EU are reiterating that there is no technical reason to slow down gas supplies and that Russia’s actions are politically motivated and linked to the EU’s response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

“There is nothing in the sanctions that would prohibit the transfer of the Siemens turbine to Russia,” Eric Mamer, head of the press service of the European Commission, said on August 5.

Some officials in the EU have accused Russia of using energy as a weapon, saying the turbine maintenance excuse was another example of Moscow coming up with an excuse to try to break the unity of the bloc against Russia due to its six-month-long invasion of Ukraine. .

Meanwhile, the Council of Europe approved a decision to voluntarily reduce gas consumption by 15%, which will be valid until March 31, 2023.

“The purpose of reducing gas consumption is to save on the eve of winter in order to prepare for possible interruptions in gas supplies from Russia, which constantly uses energy supplies as a weapon,” the report says.

The Council of the EU decided that EU countries that are not connected by gas networks to other countries, and also do not have electricity networks synchronized with the European electricity system and are more dependent on gas for electricity generation, will be exempted from fulfilling obligations to reduce gas consumption.

In the event of a serious risk of gas shortages, the EU may announce an “Allied Alert”. In this case, the restriction of gas consumption will become mandatory.

As reported, after the start of the war, large-scale sanctions were imposed on Russia by the world community.

Moscow is threatening countries that support Ukraine’s fight against Russian aggression with a complete interruption of gas supplies, which on the eve of winter could cause a deep energy crisis.
