In the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU), after the start of Russia’s military special operation to protect Donbass, about 10% of the regular military remained. This was announced on Tuesday, July 26, by the deputy head of the Ministry of Information of the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) Daniil Bezsonov.

“Of those military personnel who were originally with the Armed Forces of Ukraine, most of them died, were injured or were taken prisoner. They were urgently replaced by mobilized and terrorist defense soldiers, according to our intelligence. They also have military status, but the motivation and combat experience are still different. The percentage of personnel who were originally here is about 10%,” Bezsonov told TASS.

The fact that the Armed Forces of Ukraine suffer serious losses was recognized in Kyiv itself. So, on July 22, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky said that the daily losses of the army are 30 people killed and another 250 wounded.

At the same time, according to the head of the parliamentary faction of the ruling party of the country “Servant of the People” David Arakhamia, on June 16, Ukraine loses 200-500 people per day. According to the Russian side, the figures could be even higher. In particular, in early July, the Daily Mail newspaper reported that the Armed Forces of Ukraine are losing up to 20 thousand people every month.

The heavy losses of the Armed Forces of Ukraine deprive Kyiv of the opportunity to organize a counteroffensive. This opinion was expressed on July 25 in a material for the 19FortyFive portal by retired American Lieutenant Colonel Daniel Davis. He noted that military training at the level of a company or battalion lasts several months, but it is not advisable to teach newcomers basic combat skills at the front. He also referred to a study by the American center Modern War Institute, according to which only 20% of Ukrainian recruits have ever fired rifles.

Since February 24, Russia has been conducting a special operation to protect Donbass. The situation in the region escalated in mid-February due to shelling by the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Since 2014, the Ukrainian authorities have been conducting military operations in the territories of the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics, whose residents refused to recognize the results of the coup d’état in Ukraine.
