The government received a proposal from State Duma deputies to raise the size of student scholarships to the level of the minimum wage. The document will be sent to the Ministry of Education and Science for elaboration, the Izvestia newspaper reports.
The appeal, signed by the first deputy chairman of the State Duma Committee on Education, Yana Lantratova, states that at present the amount of scholarships is such that students only have enough money to pay for travel tickets and small purchases. In this regard, many students are forced to earn extra money, which does not have the best effect on the quality of the education they receive.
In this regard, the deputy believes that when considering the budget for 2023, it is necessary to amend the legislation so that the amount of the scholarship cannot be lower than the minimum wage of the region where the educational institution is located.
The Ministry of Education and Science confirmed receipt of the appeal, promising to consider it in the prescribed manner.
