The Ministry of Defense proposed to let foreign warships and government ships into the waters of the Northern Sea Route (NSR) only with the permission of the Russian authorities, RBC reports.

The Ministry has prepared amendments to the Russian law “On internal maritime waters”, according to which foreign ships must notify the Russian side through diplomatic channels 90 days before entering the NSR.

At the same time, the Russian authorities will be able to prohibit foreign ships from entering the NSR if this threatens the internal security of Russia and the safety of navigation along the NSR. The volume of maritime traffic along the NSR is growing, as is the military activity of some states in the NSR.

The amendments were approved by the government commission for legislative activity, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the FSB and the Ministry of Transport supported the proposals of the Ministry of Defense.
