Russia discusses buying potatoes from Belarus

Russia is discussing with Belarus the purchase of several tens of tons of potatoes in order to stabilize prices within the country. This was announced by the Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation Victoria Abramchenko in an interview with RIA Novosti.

“We are discussing the import of Belarusian potatoes with Belarus. But now a new harvest will start, and the potato situation will stabilize. The increase in potato imports will be at the level of several tens of tons, and Belarus is ready to provide such a volume. This is enough until the new harvest, ”said Ms. Abramchenko at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF).

Earlier at the SPIEF, Ms. Abramchenko said that food prices in Russia have stabilized. “In the last week, we record the excess of prices over the inflation rate only in relation to the” borscht set “, but this is a seasonal factor. The largest contribution, more than 11%, is potatoes, ”she said then.

As a reminder, the rise in food prices in May became a record over the past decade. The average value of the food price index in May amounted to 127.1 points, which is 5.8 points (4.8%) higher than the April figure and immediately by 36.1 points (39.7%) higher than in May last year. Food prices have not risen so rapidly since October 2010.
