Referendum on joining the Russian Federation may be held in the DPR in September

A referendum on the entry of the Donetsk People’s Republic into the Russian Federation may be held in mid-September. This was announced by the chairman of the Public Chamber of the DPR Alexander Kofman.

“According to the statements of our military leaders, the territory of the DPR will be completely liberated from the Ukrainian army by the end of August, respectively, probably somewhere in the middle of September,” Kofman answered a TASS question about the timing of the referendum.

According to him, it would be better to hold a referendum in the DPR on the same day as a similar event in the neighboring Luhansk People’s Republic.

Kofman said that it is planned to create a public referendum headquarters in the DPR, also by analogy with the LPR. However, now, according to him, the issue of liberation of the territories is paramount.

“So far, a full-fledged headquarters is impossible, because representatives from all regions, from all territories of the DPR will not be represented in it,” he explained.

The head of the DPR OP expressed the hope that by the time it joins the Russian Federation, the legislation of the republic will be unified with the Russian one.

“Actually, we are no different from the same Republic of Tatarstan, which is part of the Russian Federation,” he said. “So I don’t think it is very difficult to develop a package of laws and regulations that allow us a comfortable existence on the territory of the Russian Federation.”

On February 24, Russia launched a special military operation to demilitarize and denazify Ukraine. Earlier, Moscow recognized the independence of the Donbass republics from the Kyiv regime. The main task of the SVO, Russian President Vladimir Putin called the protection of the civilian population of the LPR and DPR from the criminal actions of Kyiv.
