Putin discussed with the head of the World Bank financing of projects in Russia

Russian President Vladimir Putin held telephone talks with World Bank Group President David Melpass. They discussed the prospects of the bank financing projects to modernize the Russian economy.

Mr Putin said that Russia, as one of the largest shareholders of the World Bank, is interested in further improving the efficiency of its work. Russia, in particular, could join the implementation of programs to support the vaccination of the population of developing countries.

“Topical issues of Russia’s interaction with the World Bank were discussed, as well as the prospects for the bank’s financing of projects to modernize the Russian economy, social sphere and infrastructure, expand the use of digital technologies,” the Kremlin said in a statement. Vladimir Putin and Mr Melpass discussed among other things climate change and food security.

On whose initiative the conversation took place is not specified. David Melpass is in Moscow these days.

Earlier, the World Bank improved its forecast for Russia’s GDP growth in 2021 and 2022 to 3.2%. In its previous report, the World Bank predicted the growth of the Russian economy by 2.9% in 2021 and by 3.2% in 2022. In addition, the World Bank expects a reduction in the poverty level in Russia from 12.1% in 2020 to 11.4% in 2021.
