Most Germans support the use of nuclear energy

The vast majority of the inhabitants of Germany support the extension of the operation of German nuclear power plants, and quite a few are in favor of building new reactors.

This is evidenced by the data of a survey conducted by Civey for the publication Spiegelreports Ukrinform.

As noted, 78 percent of respondents were in favor of extending the operation until the summer of 2023 of three German nuclear power plants that are still operating but should be closed before the end of the year. 67% of the respondents were in favor of these nuclear power plants operating for at least another five years. And only 27% clearly exclude such a solution to the problem of energy supply.

At the same time, 41% of respondents support the construction of new nuclear power plants, but 52% are against it.

About 5,000 people took part in the online survey on 2 and 3 August.

The day before, Christian Democratic Union leader Friedrich Merz and Christian Social Union leader Markus Söder visited the Isar 2 power plant in Bavaria. This political force supports the extension of the service life of reactors against the backdrop of a reduction in imports of Russian energy carriers, including gas.

Zeder believes that the energy generated by nuclear power plants should be used, not only during the winter, which promises to be difficult, at least until 2024. Merz urged the Bundestag to decide quickly on extending the life of existing nuclear power plants. Chancellor Olaf Scholz does not support this today.

After the Chernobyl accident in 1986 and the Fukushima nuclear disaster in 2011, most Germans agreed with the expediency of phasing out nuclear power.
