Mortality in Russia in May decreased by 6.3% compared to last year

Rosstat has updated data on mortality in Russia in 2020. Its growth was 18.6%, the natural population decline doubled – it exceeded 700 thousand people. Mortality rates in May 2021 decreased by 6.3% compared to the same period last year and by 3.7% compared to April.

A total of 2.14 million people died. “The data published by Rosstat confirm the previously announced preliminary data, the mortality rate in the Russian Federation in 2020 increased by 18.6%,” Deputy Prime Minister Tatyana Golikova told reporters (quoted by RIA Novosti).

The Deputy Prime Minister noted that the coronavirus had a significant impact on the death rate. “These are not only deaths from COVID-19, but also the negative impact that the infection has had on the health of people, especially those suffering from chronic diseases,” she added (quoted by TASS). Infant mortality decreased by 8.2%, mortality from malignant neoplasms – by 1%, and from tuberculosis – by 8.2%.

About 145 thousand people died from the coronavirus, according to the Rosstat report. This is significantly more than the operational headquarters for the fight against coronavirus recorded – 57.6 thousand. Ms. Golikova explained the discrepancy with the postmortem autopsy.
