Against the backdrop of the situation in Ukraine, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz spoke out in an interview with DPA for negotiations with Russia and a direct dialogue with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The politician noted that it is absolutely necessary to continue the dialogue with Putin. He will continue to do so in the future, as will the President of France.

According to the chancellor, some countries and leaders also need to have a dialogue with the Russian president. At the same time, negotiations should be constructive.

According to the newspaper Die Welt, during a recent visit to Ukraine, the leaders of Germany, France and Italy “behind closed doors” probably urged President Volodymyr Zelensky to sit down at the negotiating table with Russia. While in Kyiv, Olaf Scholz, Emmanuel Macron and Mario Draghi advocated granting Ukraine candidate status for EU membership. In return, they most likely persuaded Zelensky to sit down at the negotiating table with the Russian side, the publication suggests.
