Granting Ukraine and Moldova the status of a candidate member of the European Union (EU) will not have any practical consequences. This opinion was expressed on June 24 by the vice-speaker of the Federation Council (SF) Konstantin Kosachev.

He stressed that candidate status does not impose any obligations on the EU in terms of the pace of rapprochement with these countries.

“The decision is as demagogic as it is senseless. It will not have any practical implications other than additional channels for financing the “rapprochement” through EU programs and funds. However, there are enough of them now, ”Kosachev wrote in the Telegram channel.

In addition, the Vice Speaker of the Federation Council considers granting candidate status to Kyiv and Chisinau a humiliating decision for the European Union, “since it is impossible to imagine any other countries that are as far from the Copenhagen criteria as Ukraine and Moldova.”

“Absolutely non-market economy. Total corruption. Systemic suppression of systemic political opposition, up to and including criminal prosecution. Complete disregard for the rights of citizens of a different nationality, language and spiritual culture. And, as a result, lost territorial integrity,” Kosachev wrote.

The day before, the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, said that Ukraine and Moldova at the EU summit agreed on the status of candidates for the union. The decision was made by the heads of state and government of 27 EU countries at a summit in Brussels. The European Council will take further steps after the candidates fulfill the conditions outlined by the European Commission.

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky noted that the decision of the European Union was “the biggest step towards strengthening Europe.” According to the Ukrainian leader, the country has every chance of becoming a full member of the organization.

For her part, Moldovan President Maia Sandu also called the decision of the European Council to grant the republic the status of a candidate country for EU membership as historic.
