Block CEO Jack Dorsey will donate $5 million to the Brink Foundation to support Bitcoin Core developers. Decrypt writes about it.
The funding will come from the Start Small initiative that Dorsey launched in 2020. Its initial purpose is to provide assistance during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Brink is a non-profit organization founded by Bitcoin developers John Newbery and Mike Schmidt. It will receive $1 million from Start Small every year for five years.
“Brink exists to strengthen the bitcoin protocol and network through fundamental research and development, and to support the developer community through funding, training, and mentorship,” the foundation’s website says.
Earlier, Brink and mining company Marathon Digital Holdings announced the launch of a $1 million funding program to support Bitcoin Core developers.
Recall that in February 2021, 100x Group, the operator of the BitMEX crypto derivatives exchange, announced a $100,000 grant to Bitcoin Core developer Michael Ford.
Later, his colleague Jonas Schnelli left the project due to a shift in priorities and “increased legal risks associated with writing bitcoin code.”
