In Ukraine, they called a way to return the Donbass

Kiev could return Donbass through concessions on the issue of joining the North Atlantic Alliance (NATO). This was announced on Sunday, January 16, by Ukrainian political scientist Dmitry Dzhangirov on the Politwera Youtube channel.

“For example, during the reintegration of Donbass [ввести] moratorium on Ukraine’s accession to NATO. The second option is [предоставить] the right to veto Donbass for some time, for 20 years,” said Dzhangirov.

The political scientist noted that Donbass would have received such powers due to “special conditions” for reintegration, which would make the implementation of the Minsk agreements “an aggravating process.” However, such a development of events is unlikely for internal political reasons, the expert concluded.

On December 24, 2021, the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, said that Kiev was preparing for a forceful solution to the conflict in Donbass. The mission of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe over the past two weeks has counted five times more ceasefire violations there, Zakharova said.

On the same day, Rodion Miroshnik, a representative of the self-proclaimed Lugansk People’s Republic in the political subgroup of the Contact Group on resolving the situation in Donbass, adviser to the head of the republic on foreign policy, drew attention to the fact that shelling of the territory is carried out on a regular basis. According to him, there is a high probability of an escalation of the situation on the Ukrainian side, if there are appropriate domestic political conditions for this.

On December 23, Russian President Vladimir Putin suggested that the Ukrainian side was “preparing a third operation” in the Donbass. According to him, this is evidenced by publications in the Western media about allegedly existing plans for an “invasion” of Ukraine. As the president pointed out, Russia is “warned” with words about an armed conflict.

On the same day, a representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Oleg Nikolenko, said that the Ukrainian authorities were not planning to conduct a military operation in the east of the country. He noted that the country’s authorities have done a lot of work to achieve the resumption of the ceasefire.

Since 2014, the Kiev authorities have been conducting a military operation against the inhabitants of Donbass, who refused to recognize the results of the coup d’état and the new government in Ukraine. At the same time, Kiev blames Moscow for the current situation. Russia has repeatedly stated that it is not a party to the intra-Ukrainian conflict.
