In the US, for the first time since April, the weekly number of applications for unemployment benefits increased

Over the past reporting week, ended June 12, 412 thousand applications for unemployment benefits were filed in the United States, follows from the report of the Ministry of Labor of the country. This is 37 thousand applications more than a week earlier. Thus, for the first time since the end of April, the country again recorded an increase in the number of applications for benefits, and their number reached a maximum since May 15. At the same time, analysts predicted that this figure will continue to decline and will amount to about 360 thousand.

Nonetheless, the average over the past four weeks shows that the US economy continues to recover. Now it is 395 thousand applications, which is the lowest value since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020. The number of applications still significantly exceeds the rates observed in the United States in 2019 and at the very beginning of 2020. However, the average number of weekly applications for unemployment benefits in the United States for the entire history of observations is 371.8 thousand. Thus, the current number of applications filed is almost equal to the normal for the country. In addition, the number of citizens receiving benefits for the week ended May 29 dropped by 500 thousand people at once, to 14.8 million. This is half as much as a year earlier.
