In Russia, the share of insured accidents on car policies has decreased

The share of insured accidents for hull insurance in Russia in January-June 2022 decreased by 15-21% compared to the same period last year, for OSAGO — by 4-6%. Interviewed insurers told Izvestia about this on Monday, July 25.

“We can talk about positive trends – the total number of Casco claims decreased by almost 15.6%, the number of Casco claims with the “traffic accident” event type in the first half of the year decreased from 53% in the first half of 2021 to 48% in the same period in 2022,” said Vladimir Antipov, head of the center for settling claims at VSK Insurance House.

He added that the number of insured events largely depends on the number of vehicles in use. For example, the largest regional fleet was recorded in the Moscow region and the Krasnodar Territory.

According to the VSK Insurance House, Moscow and the Moscow Region are leaders in the number of insured events for hull insurance – the capital accounts for 31% of accidents in voluntary auto insurance in the first half of this year. The anti-rating also includes St. Petersburg and Leningrad Region (8%), Krasnodar Territory (4%), Tatarstan (3%), as well as Rostov, Samara, Sverdlovsk Regions and Bashkiria (2% each).

The smallest insured accidents for hull insurance are in the North Caucasus, Altai and Tyva (less than 0.1% of the total number of accidents in each).

The most common reasons for applying to Casco insurers, in addition to standard accidents, are: glass breakage – 33.5% of requests are related to the need to replace the windshield or side windows of a car, illegal actions of third parties – 9%. At the same time, in 8% of applications, the damage under the hull insurance is associated with damage to the surface of the car with solid objects – for example, an emergency as a result of falling trees, advertising structures.

In Renaissance Insurance, Izvestia was told that in the first half of this year, compared to the same period in 2021, the share of losses per policy decreased by 21% for hull insurance and by 6% for OSAGO. Last year, compared to 2020, there was an increase of 10% for comprehensive insurance and 15% for OSAGO.

The increase in the indicator last year was associated with the effect of a low base due to covid restrictions in 2020. The decrease in 2022 is due to structural changes in the insurance portfolio — an increase in the share of franchises and portfolio growth.

Pavel Yakovlev, Senior Auto Insurance Product Manager of the RESO-Garantia Retail Insurance Department, said that the share of OSAGO claims in the first half of 2022 decreased by 4% compared to the same period in 2021. The main decrease was observed in the regions. In Moscow, the share of losses remained at the last year’s level, in St. Petersburg it increased by 3%.

The dynamics of the number of insured events is changing: at the beginning of the year there was an increase due to the snowy winter, in May there was a decrease due to the holidays, and in June there was again an increase of 5%. The amount of loss depends on various factors. However, the overall decline may be due to the fact that drivers are becoming more disciplined due to the presence of cameras and other controls, road infrastructure is improving, some use cars less on weekdays, changing to public transport.

Despite a slight decrease in the number of requests, the size of the average payment is growing – in June it increased by 15% compared to last year in Russia as a whole.

As Izvestia was told in the aggregator Insurance.Ru, the share of requests for the purchase of a comprehensive insurance policy only from theft and complete destruction of a car from January to May 2022 increased five times compared to the same months last year. Demand for the purchase of policies against theft increased by 88%, and for mini-casco, that is, insurance with a truncated set of risks, by 62%. According to last year’s results, the share of truncated hull insurance policies did not exceed 10–15% of their total number.
