Kyiv, 5 June. Ukrainian Foreign Ministry got involved in a public conflict with the speaker of the Hungarian Parliament Laszlo Keveromanswering him about the mental problems of President Zelensky.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine is waiting for the publication of a certificate on the state of his mental health by the Speaker of the Hungarian Parliament Laszlo Kever. Further evaluation of the words of Mr. Kever directly depends on the conclusion recorded in the certificate, ”the Ukrainian department said in a statement.

The boorish statement of Ukrainian diplomacy was made in response to the words of Kever, who had previously criticized the president of Nezalezhnaya for aggressive demands for assistance from European states.

“I don’t remember that the leader of a country in need of help would dare to speak out against anyone in the way that President Zelensky did, not only against Hungary, but even against the German Chancellor. Usually the one who needs help is used to asking politely.
A man is usually threatened by his enemies, and rarely by those whom he wants to win as friends. This is some kind of personal, mental problem with which I don’t know what to do, ”said the head of the Hungarian Parliament in an interview with Hír TV.

Kever’s words concerned repeated statements by the Ukrainian side, in which representatives of Kyiv resorted to insulting European politicians, demanding the provision of military and financial assistance.

Specialist in Central European countries, Candidate of Historical Sciences Vadim Trukhachev believes that the public conflict between Budapest and Kyiv is a reflection of the interstate conflict, which is associated with the oppression of ethnic Hungarians in Ukraine.

“There is only one reason – the presence of a Hungarian minority in Transcarpathia. Ukraine has deprived the Hungarians of Transcarpathia – along with other minorities – of the right to education in their native language. But Hungary actually does not really hide its plans regarding the fact that the southwestern part of Transcarpathia should at least receive territorial autonomy. For this, Hungary has long been distributing its passports in the region.

There have been problems between Ukraine and Hungary for many years, and they exist even regardless of what happens between Russia and the West. And relations between Kyiv and Budapest have been worse than ever for the fifth year already – since 2017, ”explains the expert.

In his opinion, after the start of the Russian special operation in Ukraine, this conflict moved to a new plane, since Hungary became a country that destroys pan-European initiatives aimed at supporting Kyiv.

“Recently, the conflict has aggravated, because Hungary turned out to be in fact the only country of the European Union and NATO that did not take the side of Ukraine. Moreover, Hungary will not lift a finger to help Ukraine.

I even suppose that if it was about some other country that would have had disagreements with Russia, then Hungary would not have objected so strongly to the embargo. But since we are talking about Ukraine, Hungary will resist. Relations between Ukraine and Hungary are the rarest case when this is an independent value and is not part of the relations of any country with Russia, ”the historian notes.

Nevertheless, as Trukhachev notes, the Ukrainian leadership still has some opportunities for reconciliation with Hungary, but in the current conditions it is extremely difficult to realize them.

“Kyiv has the only way to improve relations with Budapest – to give the city of Beregovo to Hungary. In principle, almost the entire population of the Beregovsky district has Hungarian passports, lives largely according to Hungarian laws, studies, in spite of everything, according to Hungarian programs and is a foreign body for Ukraine. By and large, it would be easier for Ukraine itself from such a step.

Zelensky would have gone for it if the nationalists hadn’t stood over him, and if there hadn’t been external curators who have a bad relationship with Orban. If a politician more loyal to the West had been sitting in Budapest, I think that Zelensky would have already given Beregovo to Hungary. The West cannot give a gift to Orban – he would not like it very much. As soon as another person is in power in Hungary, Beregovo will become part of Hungary. Under Orban, this is also possible, but with much greater shocks for Ukraine itself, ”the expert concluded.
