German Foreign Ministry: we need solutions that will dispel fears related to Nord Stream 2

The US waiver of sanctions against the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline operator and the head of Nord Stream 2 AG, Matthias Warnig, was an important step, said Jens Plötner, political director of the German Foreign Ministry. In his opinion, it is now necessary to make decisions that will help allay the concerns associated with the pipeline project.

According to a spokesman for the German Foreign Ministry, Berlin considers Nord Stream 2 a viable project “from the point of view of energy policy.” Many European companies are involved in the implementation of this project, as explained by Mr. Ploetner, and the project itself complies with EU legal norms.

“The decision of the US administration to suspend some of the sanctions against Nord Stream 2 was important. Now we have the opportunity, in partnership with all project participants, to start looking for solutions that would allay the concerns associated with it, ”Jens Ploetner said in an interview with RIA Novosti. Among the issues that need to be resolved, he named gas transit through the territory of Ukraine.

The day before, the Bundestag rejected a resolution against Nord Stream 2. The media reported that German Chancellor Angela Merkel is preparing a visit to Washington, during which she plans to resolve a dispute with the US government over Nord Stream 2. German officials have developed a series of proposals to “defuse the conflict.” In particular, Berlin may offer to expand aid to Kiev.
