German environmentalists from the organization Deutsche Umwelthilfe (DUH) are asking to revoke the permit for the construction of the Nord Stream-2 pipeline or to suspend its laying, according to the organization’s website. The ecologists have submitted a corresponding application to BSH. Activists are unhappy that the project’s compliance with the country’s climate goals was not verified at the time of its approval.

“Deutsche Umwelthilfe today filed an application with the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency with a request to revoke the permit for the construction and operation of Nord Stream 2 for climate protection reasons. Although the pipeline is the largest fossil fuel project in Europe, the impact on climate targets has not been tested in the previous approval process. Alternatively, DUH is applying for compensation for the failed climate protection audit and for the suspension of further pipeline construction during this period, ”the statement said (translated by RIA Novosti).

At the same time, the commercial director of Nord Stream 2 AG, Reinhard Ontid, said at a session during the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) that the construction of the pipeline would be completed. “The gas pipeline will be ready,” he said.

The Nord Stream 2 project envisages the construction of two lines of a gas pipeline with a total capacity of 55 billion cubic meters. m per year from the coast of Russia through the Baltic Sea to Germany. Now the pipe is being laid by two Russian pipelayers – Akademik Chersky and Fortuna. In December 2019, work was suspended after the decision of the Swiss Allseas to abandon pipe-laying due to possible sanctions from the United States. However, the construction was subsequently resumed. The project is scheduled to be completed by the end of September 2021.

US President Joe Biden at the end of May called the imposition of new sanctions against Nord Stream 2 counterproductive. The United States refused to impose restrictions on the pipeline operator Nord Stream 2 AG. Instead, Washington imposed sanctions on 13 vessels working to complete the project.
