Former Unilever CEO Kees van der Waaij has passed away at the age of 71. Van der Waaij was chairman of the board of directors of the food group from 2001 to 2011 and a member of the Supervisory Board from 2013 to December last year.

From his family’s obituary in the Financial Newspaper it turns out that Van der Waaij’s death on 10 June was completely unexpected. The former Unilever boss has held various positions in the corporate world.

He was still a member of the executive board of VNO-NCW and chairman of the advisory board of the National Register, which must provide companies with well-qualified commissioners and supervisors. Van der Waaij has also been chairman of the lobby club International Chamber of Commerce (ICC ), where he was succeeded in 2012 by the current Minister of Social Affairs and Employment, Karien van Gennip.

Van der Waaij was married and had three children and five grandchildren.
