Finland may halt high-speed rail project

MOSCOW, August 11/ Radio Sputnik. Minister of Foreign Trade and Development of Finland Ville Skinnari proposed to the Cabinet of Ministers to suspend the project for the construction of a high-speed railway line (HSR) in the Russian direction due to a special operation in Ukraine.

The Itärata (Eastern Railway) project involves establishing a direct connection between Finnish cities with a possible extension of the main line to the territory of the Russian Federation.

“It is clear that the Itärata project and the activities of its project company must be suspended,” quotes Minister of Public Broadcasting Corporation YLE.

One of the economic justifications for the project, which is estimated at several billion euros, is the development of humanitarian and economic ties with Russia, the article says.

According to Skinner, the money should be directed to the development of another line of business.

Earlier, Sputnik radio reported that the Turkish Foreign Ministry reproached Finland for not fulfilling the terms of the deal to join NATO.
