The European Union has introduced a ban on flights of Belarusian airlines in its airspace. They are also prohibited from landing in EU countries.
“The European Council decided to strengthen the existing restrictions in connection with the situation in Belarus by introducing bans on flights in EU airspace and on access to EU airports for all types of Belarusian carriers,” the statement says. All EU countries will have to refuse permission to land, take off or fly Belarusian airlines.
The decision was made in connection with the forced landing of a Ryanair plane in Minsk on May 23, which “endangers flight safety,” the statement said. The EU condemned the detention of the founder of the Telegram channel Nexta Roman Protasevich and the Russian woman Sofia Sapieha, who flew on this plane from Athens to Vilnius.
