The statements of the EU countries about non-recognition of the results of the elections to the State Duma and the threat of imposing new sanctions are attempts to intimidate Russia. This opinion was expressed on Monday, September 20, by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova on the air of the program “Evening with Vladimir Solovyov” on the TV channel “Russia-1”.
“When we are told from the European Union about the atmosphere of intimidation, they are absolutely right: they have created this very atmosphere of intimidation for several years and directly on the eve of our elections,” the diplomat said.
Thus, she commented on the approval by the European Parliament of the report of the Lithuanian deputy Andrius Kubilius, which dealt with the non-recognition of the results of the elections in the Russian Federation, which had not even begun at that time. The document also called for the EU to extend sanctions against Russia if the elections “are deemed unfair and held in violation of democratic principles.”
“It’s like bullying? Of course, direct. Is it possible to think that this report has been made on the basis of certain facts have emerged on the eve of the election? Perhaps, we would still be reconciled. But it is not so “- said Zakharov.
She recalled that preparations for this round of intimidation by the EU began long before the elections themselves and before this report of the European Parliament, and statements about their intention not to recognize the elections in Russia were heard in the union back in July.
“And when, before the elections, people endowed with power, representing in the European Parliament, as it were, their countries and peoples, because they do not represent the interests of these countries and peoples, they represent the interests of those lobbying groups that have been sent such training manuals, talk about sanctions and this happens before the elections, how can this be qualified differently? ” – added the official representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
On September 16, Russian presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov said that the approval of the report calling on the EU authorities to reconsider relations with Russia and prepare for non-recognition of the election results is regrettable. He made allowances for the recommendatory nature of the document.
During the plenary session of the EP, the representative of Slovakia in the European Parliament and the leader of the Republic party, Milan Uhrik, said that it was time for Europe to stop listening to the United States and start building friendly relations with Russia. According to him, liberal-minded circles in the West want war with Russia, because they need its markets and wealth.
Russian State Duma deputy Ruslan Balbek noted that Russia has already stopped paying attention to the reports that are being adopted against it in the West. The parliamentarian noted that the decision of the European Parliament will not affect relations between Russia and the Western countries, and the adoption of a new strategy towards Moscow is just a way to maintain political status.
In 2021, elections to the State Duma were held for the first time in a new, three-day format. September 19 was the main voting day, and September 17 and 18 were optional. It was possible to vote both online and by coming to the polling station in person. The possibility of electronic voting was provided to residents of Moscow, Murmansk, Kursk, Nizhny Novgorod, Rostov and Yaroslavl regions, as well as Sevastopol.
Simultaneously with the elections to the State Duma, on a single voting day, direct elections were held for the heads of nine Russian constituent entities (in three more regions, deputies of legislative assemblies elected the highest administrative persons) and 39 regional parliaments.
