American billionaire Warren Buffett has announced that he is stepping down as trustee of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Mr. Buffett announced this in a statement on the donation of his shares of the Berkshire Hathaway investment fund he founded to various charities. Among other things, Mr. Buffett announced a new donation to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and promised to continue investing in it.
He noted that for many years he was the “inactive trustee” of this fund, while supporting the directions that Bill and Melinda Gates chose. In May, the fate of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation was quite actively discussed after the Gates announced their divorce. In addition to them, only Mr. Buffett was in the management of the fund, so the American media wrote then that now it was he who could play an important role in the affairs of the fund in case of discrepancies between the former spouses.
In 2006, Mr. Buffett pledged to donate all of his Berkshire Hathaway shares to charity. Since then, these donations have totaled about $ 41 billion. Today, it was also announced that the investment fund will donate $ 4.1 billion to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and four other charities.
