VimpelCom has accelerated in the capital // Operator has become the second fastest mobile Internet operator in Moscow

Invested last year about 15.5 billion rubles. During the network renewal in Moscow, Vimpelcom in April-June took the second place in terms of the speed of mobile Internet in the region, overtaking MTS, Ookla calculated. MegaFon remained the leader, but experts expect increased competition in the capital, as its competitors plan to increase investments in the network.

Kommersant got acquainted with the study of the quality of mobile Internet in the Russian Federation, conducted by Ookla on the basis of 7.4 million speed tests in the Speedtest application. It follows from it that according to the results of the second quarter in Moscow, VimpelCom took the second place, overtaking MTS in terms of the average download speed. The operator’s result was 32.4 Mbit / s, while MTS’s – 28.4 Mbit / s. MegaFon remained the leader with 48.85 Mbps. Tele2 came in fourth with 16.1 Mbps.

In terms of unloading speed in Moscow, VimpelCom became the leader last year.

According to the results of the second quarter, the operator’s results on this indicator amounted to 14.9 Mbit / s, while the closest competitor MTS – 12.6 Mbit / s.

MegaFon is only in third place (12 Mbps), while Tele2 is in fourth (7.3 Mbps).

In Russia as a whole, MegaFon remained the leader in terms of mobile Internet speed (download – 32.9 Mbit / s and upload – 11.9 Mbit / s). In second place is MTS (21.7 Mbit / s and 8.8 Mbit / s), and in third place is Vimpelcom (19.7 Mbit / s and 9.6 Mbit / s). Tele2 is in fourth place with 18.9 Mbps for download and 8.2 Mbps for traffic. In general, the average speed of mobile Internet in Russia has remained almost unchanged, having increased by only 0.4 Mbps to 24.7 Mbps. Last year, the growth was more noticeable – by almost 5 Mbps.

In 2020, VimpelCom spent 15.5 billion rubles. to update the network in Moscow. In total, last year the operator built more than 10 thousand base stations, which is three times more than in 2019, the director of the Moscow region of the company Dmitry Mashin said earlier. “In 2021, we continue construction in the metropolitan area with a focus on the region and plan to invest a comparable amount to last year,” the company said.

MTS only emphasized that the company is the leader in Moscow in terms of user measurements – when the speed is measured not by downloading a file from a specific server, but in real conditions of consumption, for example, when watching a video. Investments in the region in 2021 doubled, to 16 billion, the operator added. He plans to build 6.5 thousand base stations – two and a half times more than in 2020.

Tele2 assured that in 2020 the number of LTE base stations in the Russian Federation was increased by 56% year-on-year: “Now every base station of the operator in the country is equipped with LTE.” MegaFon agrees with the results of the study and promises new investments in the network: “For six months of this year, 75% of the annual plan for the construction of the network has been implemented, and the investment program for the second half of the year has already been expanded”.

Speedtest measures the speed from the subscriber to the nearest server, where most often there is no necessary content, so real speeds can be 15–20% lower than those shown by the application, says Denis Kuskov, CEO of TelecomDaily. But the measurements of the Megabitus service (owned by Telecom Daily, in Moscow) confirm that Vimpelcom has significantly improved its coverage over the past year, the expert says. He predicts increased competition between operators in the region this year.

Not everyone believes that Speedtest data reflects the real situation, but there is no more reliable data, says Alexey Boyko, an analyst at MForum Analytics.

Most often, users measure the speed when there are problems with access to the network, he reminds: “As a result, we can get lower average speeds.” Nevertheless, he believes, the alignment of forces of the operators is correct.
