Soyuz rocket with OneWeb satellites launched from Vostochny

The launch of the Soyuz-2.1b carrier rocket with 36 OneWeb spacecraft was successfully launched from the Vostochny cosmodrome, said Dmitry Rogozin, general director of Roscosmos.

Mikhail Kaigorodov, Commercial Director of OneWeb in Russia, announced that the company intends to provide communication services in Russia after beta testing in the fourth quarter of 2021. “The eighth launch from the Vostochny cosmodrome will allow … to provide coverage of the earth’s surface above 50 degrees north latitude, including the Arctic zone and almost the entire territory of the Russian Federation,” he said after the launch (quoted by RIA Novosti).

This past satellite launch was the seventh in the OneWeb program, with the eighth launch scheduled for July. The OneWeb project envisages the creation of a network of 882 small spacecraft in orbit, which should provide high-speed Internet access around the world.
