Sberbank’s customers have the opportunity to hand over a plastic bank card for recycling through an ATM. This service is now available at 10,000 Sberbank ATMs, the company said. Only expired Sberbank cards can be sent for processing through ATMs.
Bank cards are made of PVC, which cannot be recycled with other plastic products. If you throw out expired cards along with household waste, “plastic will pollute the environment for centuries, breaking down into dangerous microparticles,” says a message on the Sberbank website.
Sberbank intends to increase the number of ATMs that can be used to return cards for recycling to 33,000 by the end of the year. Note that in 2020 the bank reduced the number of ATMs by 8.4%, to 70.4 thousand.
At the end of 2020, Deputy Chairman of the Board of Sberbank Kirill Tsarev told RBC that by the end of 2023 the bank intends to increase the share of cards issued without a plastic version to 50%. VTB plans to issue 40% of cards exclusively in virtual format by 2023. By December last year, the share of virtual cards at Sberbank and VTB was about 10% and 5%, respectively.
