Twitter posted report on requests from the authorities of different countries to remove content published on the social network between July and December 2020. In terms of the number of such requests, Russia ranked third.
In total, during the reporting period, Twitter received 38,524 requests, of which about 29% were approved. 94% of the total number of applications came from five countries.
Leaders in terms of the number of requests:
- Japan (16,649 requests)
- India (6971);
- Russia (6351);
- Turkey (3749);
- South Korea (2 644).
As specified in the reporting, 569 requests were sent from Russia in court. The total number of applications in the country decreased by 29% compared to the first half of 2020 (then there were 8,949). It is clarified that the number of inquiries motivated by the promotion of suicide and harm to health increased by 64%.
On March 10, Roskomnadzor announced the start of a Twitter slowdown. The reason was publications with prohibited information – in particular, about appeals to minors about suicide, which the social network did not delete at the request of the department. Roskomnadzor also threatened Twitter with blocking, but in May lifted restrictions on the speed of the social network.
