The US presidential administration has called on Ukraine to refrain from criticizing the Nord Stream 2 agreement with Germany, four sources told Politico. The US authorities said that public speaking out against the agreement could harm the relationship between Washington and Kiev. According to Politico, Ukraine does not like this.
The publication reports that Washington also asked Kiev not to discuss the plans of the United States and Germany with Congress. A senior administration official, Joe Biden, disputed the report and said the situation was more difficult. However, he did not give more detailed information. A source close to President Volodymyr Zelenskiy told Politico that Ukraine still believes the US can stop the project through sanctions.
The American media reported yesterday that the United States and Germany had reached an agreement on Nord Stream 2. According to The Wall Street Journal, the parties will announce the agreements today, July 21. Bloomberg reported that under this agreement, Germany pledges to impose sanctions against Russia if Moscow uses energy as an instrument of pressure on Ukraine. According to Reuters, the United States reserves the right to impose sanctions as part of the deal.
Joe Biden and Angela Merkel held talks last week. They announced different positions on Nord Stream 2. At the same time, Mr. Biden noted that both countries agree that Russia should not be allowed to use energy to put pressure on neighboring countries. Ms Merkel stressed the importance of preserving gas transit through Ukraine. The press secretary of the President of Ukraine Serhiy Nikiforov, commenting on the negotiations, said that there was no specifics regarding support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and gas transit through its territory. In June, Vladimir Zelensky said he was surprised by the decision of the US authorities not to impose new sanctions against the construction of Nord Stream 2.
The construction of the first string of Nord Stream 2 was technically completed on 10 June. Operator Nord Stream 2 AG intends to complete the construction of the entire gas pipeline in August. It will take three months for tests and obtaining certificates.
