The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Syrian Arab Republic Faisal Mikdad on Thursday, September 23, said that Ankara should immediately withdraw its troops from the northern provinces of the country.
“I believe that Turkey should withdraw its troops immediately. The international community, in turn, should support Syria’s efforts to liberate the territories it occupied in the north of the country, “RIA Novosti quoted the head of the Syrian Foreign Ministry as saying.
Thus, Mikdad commented on the recent escalation of tensions in the province of Idlib, which borders Turkey. He believes that its main reason for the aggravation of the situation is “the Turkish occupation, as well as the support that Turkey provides to terrorist groups on the ground.”
Earlier, one Syrian soldier was killed, another was injured during artillery shelling by terrorists of positions of government forces in Idlib, near the village of Maaret-Muhos.
On August 31, four Syrian military forces were killed in an attack by terrorists from clandestine cells, and eight were injured in the Deraa al-Balad area of Deraa province. Rear Admiral Vadim Kulit, deputy head of the Russian Center for the Reconciliation of the Warring Sides of Syria, said on the same day that three attacks on positions of the Syrian government forces by militants of illegal armed groups controlled by Turkey were recorded in the Aleppo province.
In March 2020, a meeting was held in Moscow between the presidents of Russia and Turkey, Vladimir Putin and Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The purpose of the negotiations was to agree on the settlement of the military conflict in Syria. The result was a joint patrol.
Later, the Russian Ministry of Defense reported that the route of the first joint Russian-Turkish patrol of the M4 highway section in Idlib was reduced due to provocations planned by radical gangs not controlled by Turkey.
The M4 highway connects Latakia and Aleppo. The joint patrol was established with the aim of ensuring the safety of movement of civilians and to become a guarantee of preventing an escalation of the situation in the region.
The military operation of the Turkish armed forces “Shield of the Euphrates” is carried out with the support of the Free Syrian Army in the north of the Syrian Arab Republic (SAR) in Aleppo. It was held from August 2016 to the end of March 2017. Operations Olive Branch and Spring of Peace were conducted in the same area. As a result, a security buffer zone was created between the cities of Azaz and Jerablus to the north of Aleppo province, Afrin was occupied and the border areas east of the Euphrates River were taken under control.
