Belgium to close airspace for Belarusian planes

Belgium plans to ban Belarusian aircraft from using its airspace. Belgian planes will also be banned from flying over the territory of Belarus, said Belgian Transport Minister Georges Zhilkine.

“I will propose today at a government meeting a ban on the use of Belarusian airspace by Belgian aircraft, but also to prohibit Belarusian aircraft from flying over Belgium and landing at Belgian airports. This measure was approved at the EU summit, which was attended by our Prime Minister. I propose to start implementing this measure, ”said Mr. Zhilkine (quoted by RIA Novosti).

On May 23, a Ryanair passenger plane en route from Athens to Vilnius was urgently landed at the Minsk airport at the direction of the President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko. On board were Belarusian oppositionist and ex-editor-in-chief of the Nexta Telegram channel Roman Protasevich and his companion, Russian citizen Sofia Sapega. Subsequently, they were detained, now both are under arrest.

Against the background of the incident, flights over Belarus were suspended by a number of airlines, some countries stopped operating flights to the country itself. The EU aviation authorities have recommended avoiding the airspace of Belarus.
